Yokosuka's Oldest Park

愛宕山公園  -- Atagoyama Park is the oldest park in Yokosuka City.

Located in the historical Uraga District, the park was established in 1891.

It was originally developed as a park to host a  monument commemorating Saburosuke Nakajima, who worked for the Uraga Magistrate's office and played an important role event s surrounding Commodore Perry and the so-called Black Ships' arrival off of Yokosuka in 1853.

A monument commemorating of the departure from Yokosuka of KANRIN-maru (which carried a Japanese diplomatic mission to U.S.) for a was built in 1960 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States. Behind the monument are the names of crew members such as Captain Katsu Kaishu, Yukichi Fukuzawa, and John Manjiro and others.
